›› How to Lower Cholesterol

There are many reason why people have high cholesterol. These include a person's diet, heredity, or sometimes both. In any case, the first thing the doctor is going to tell you to do to try to lower cholesterol levels is for you to change the way and things that you eat. If your doctor sees that you haven't successfully lowered your cholesterol through dieting after about 6 months, he/she will probably consider placing you on a cholesterol lowing medication as well. Along with a healthy diet, these medications will drastically help you lower your cholesterol levels to the healthy range. Some of the tips that doctors give when trying to reduce bad cholesterol with dieting are:

  1. Do not eat high-fat foods. Saturated fats are a huge source of LDL cholesterol.
  2. Take away some of the saturated fats that you do eat in your diet and instead add unsaturated fats in its place.
  3. Do not eat high cholesterol food. There are many different foods on the market that are advertised to be low in cholesterol. It is always a great idea to choose these over ones that do not say this.
  4. Eat lots of complex carbs. These are your starches and fibers.
  5. If you are overweight, it is a good idea to get more exercise along with changing your diet. Simply being overweight adds to your LDL cholesterol levels.
